Early Life and FamilyAmerican actor Jon Bernthal, known for his iconic roles as Shane Walsh in "The Walking Dead" and Frank Castle (The Punisher) in "Daredevil," hails from Washington, D.C. Born to Joan Lurie and Eric Lawrence "Rick" Bernthal, his paternal grandfather, Murray Bernthal, was a renowned musician and producer. Bernthal has two brothers, Nicholas and Thomas. Both his parents are Jewish, with his maternal grandfather being of German descent, while other ancestors emigrated from Austria, Lithuania, Poland, and Russia.
Education and Early Career
Bernthal graduated from Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C. He went on to attend Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York, before relocating to Moscow, Russia, where he studied at the Moscow Art Theatre School. During his time there, he played professional baseball in the European professional league.
Theatrical and Television Beginnings
Since 2002, Bernthal has performed in over 30 regional and Off-Broadway productions, many of which were staged by the theater company Fovea Floods. He also made guest appearances in popular television series such as "Boston Legal," "CSI: Miami," and "How I Met Your Mother." Bernthal's first recurring role was in the short-lived television series "Class."
Breakthrough Roles
In 2009, Bernthal landed a supporting role as Al Capone in Ben Stiller's comedy film "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian." He then gained recognition for his portrayal of Sergeant Manuel Rodriguez in the acclaimed miniseries "The Pacific." In 2010, he was cast as Shane Walsh in AMC's "The Walking Dead," an adaptation of the popular comic book series. Bernthal played a central role in the show until 2012, earning a Scream Award nomination for Best Male Performance.
Further Success and Expansion
After leaving "The Walking Dead," Bernthal starred in the television series "Harry's Law." In 2013, he appeared in the crime drama "Snitch" and the television series "Mob City," where he portrayed a police officer navigating the corruption of Los Angeles. He also had notable supporting roles in Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street" and the sports comedy "Grudge Match."
Transition to Film and Video Games
In 2014, Bernthal starred as Private Grady Travis alongside Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, and Logan Lerman in the war film "Fury." That same year, he became the character model and voice actor for Jim Decker in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare's "Exo Zombies" mode. Additionally, he played in the crime thriller "Sicario" alongside Emily Blunt and Josh Brolin.
The Punisher and Beyond
In 2015, Marvel announced that Bernthal would be portraying Frank Castle/The Punisher in the second season of "Daredevil." Following this, he appeared in the Irish film "Pilgrimage." Bernthal has continued to star in both television and film, including roles in "The Accountant" and "Wind River."
Personal Life
On September 25, 2010, Bernthal married Erin Angle in Potomac, Maryland. They have three children: two sons born in August 2011 and February 2013, and a daughter named Adeline, born in February 2015. In December 2013, Bernthal revealed that he had broken his nose for the thirteenth time.
