Jon Bluming was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on March 29, 1934. His early life was marked by World War II, during which he sustained a leg injury in the Korean War. In 1951, he was sent to Japan for treatment and rehabilitation.
Discovering Judo and Martial Arts
While in Japan, Bluming witnessed a Judo demonstration at the Kodokan. The experience inspired him to begin practicing the martial art at a small dojo in Amsterdam. He earned his first black belt in Judo in 1954 and became captain of the Dutch National Team, leading them to a gold medal at the European Championships in 1957.
Journey to Japan and Karate Mastery
In 1959, Bluming traveled to Japan again and trained at the Kenshusei dojo with 25 of the country's top Judo practitioners. He also began studying ancient Japanese martial arts, including Kendo and Jiu-Jitsu. Bluming's talent for Karate stood out, and he studied under Masutatsu Oyama, the founder of Kyokushin Karate.
Founding Kyokushin in Europe
In 1962, Bluming returned to Europe and introduced Kyokushin Karate to the continent. He received a 6th Dan from Masutatsu Oyama in 1965, becoming the only non-Japanese holder of such a high rank at the time. In 1994, he attained the rank of 10th Dan in Karate, the highest level in the martial art.
