Triple H and the Reign of Evolution
At Unforgiven 2002, Triple H defended his World Heavyweight Championship against Rob Van Dam. During the match, Ric Flair emerged with a sledgehammer. Flair initially feigned an attack on Triple H, but then turned on Van Dam, aiding Triple H in retaining his title.
From that point forward, Flair became Triple H's manager and occasional tag team partner. Over the following months, Flair played a pivotal role in Triple H's victories over D'Lo Brown, Van Dam, Kane, Booker T, Jeff Hardy, and Shawn Michaels. At Armageddon 2002, Triple H defeated Michaels to regain the World Heavyweight Championship.
Evolution's Formation and Dominance
In July 2002, Triple H moved to RAW. A month and a half later, he was named World Heavyweight Champion by Eric Bischoff. That same night, Triple H defended the title against Ric Flair, defeating him by disqualification. Later that night, Flair and Van Dam defeated Triple H and Chris Jericho.
At Unforgiven 2002, Triple H defended his title against Van Dam once again. During the match, Flair came to his aid and helped him win. On the following RAW, Triple H's celebration was interrupted by Scott Steiner, who demanded a title match at the Royal Rumble. Triple H accepted and left the ring with Flair.
The following week, Triple H and Steiner competed in an arm-wrestling contest, which Steiner easily won. Two weeks later, both wrestlers engaged in a posing competition, which Triple H won with the help of bribed judges. The rivalry continued a week later when Steiner confronted Triple H in the ring, beating him up and stripping him down to his underwear.
On January 19, 2003, at the Royal Rumble, Triple H and Steiner faced off for the World Heavyweight Championship. Steiner won via disqualification after Triple H hit him with a sledgehammer. After the match, Steiner attacked both Triple H and Flair with the weapon.
Batista's Emergence and Alliance with Evolution
In October 2002, vignettes featuring Batista aired on RAW. On November 4, Batista made his RAW debut, destroying Justin Credible. The following week, Batista encountered Flair backstage, who praised his athleticism. Batista thanked him briefly and left, later defeating D'Lo Brown.
A week later, Flair was scheduled to face Kane, but Batista attacked Kane before he could engage with Flair. Batista became Flair's manager, accompanying him to his matches. A week later, Batista defeated Kane after Flair hit Kane with a chair. On December 2, Batista defeated Hurricane and brawled with Kane after the match.
At Armageddon 2003, Batista faced Kane and emerged victorious with Flair's assistance. The following night, Kane and Van Dam defeated Batista, Rosey, Jamal, and Rico. A week later, Batista easily defeated Spike Dudley. On January 13, 2003, Batista participated in a four-way over-the-top-rope elimination match, which was won by Chris Jericho.
At the 2003 Royal Rumble, Batista entered the Royal Rumble match and lasted until the final four, but was eliminated by The Undertaker.
Scott Steiner's Return and the Formation of Evolution
On the January 20 RAW, Steiner demanded a rematch with Triple H, but Triple H claimed that doctors had advised him against competing that night. Flair put forward Batista as an opponent, setting the stage for the main event of the show. Backstage, Steiner met with Randy Orton, who downplayed Steiner's loss at the Royal Rumble and hinted at his own impending return, despite doctors predicting a year-long absence. Steiner then attacked Orton.
During Batista and Steiner's match, Randy Orton ran in and attacked Steiner. Flair also interfered, but Steiner took out all three opponents. Triple H then entered the ring and attacked Steiner. Orton, Batista, Flair, and Triple H proceeded to triple-team Steiner, with Triple H finally hitting the Pedigree on him. The show went off the air with Steiner lying in the ring.
On January 27, on RAW, Batista and Triple H defeated Kane and Rob Van Dam. On February 2, at a house show, Batista faced Brock Lesnar and lost. On the February 3 RAW, Tommy Dreamer entered the ring, only to be met by Triple H, Batista, Randy Orton, and Ric Flair. They threw Dreamer out of the ring, and Triple H proclaimed that the three wrestlers standing there represented three generations. Flair was the greatest wrestler of all time, Triple H the best wrestler of the present, and Orton and Batista the future of professional wrestling. Triple H named their group "Evolution."
Evolution took over the V.I.P. section and watched the show from there. During the show, Batista and Orton attacked Goldust and powerbombed him into an electrical box. In the main event, Scott Steiner defeated Chris Jericho, earning a rematch against Triple H at No Way Out 2003. A week later, Batista defeated Tommy Dreamer, who was then attacked by the entire Evolution.
On February 17, Triple H and Batista lost a tag team match to Scott Steiner and Booker T. At No Way Out 2003, Triple H retained his World Heavyweight Championship against Scott Steiner following multiple interferences from Orton, Batista, and Flair.
On February 24, Batista and Orton lost a match to Booker T and Goldust. On March 1, at a house show, Batista and Orton competed in a match against The Dudley Boyz and both suffered injuries. Batista injured his biceps, while Orton injured his ankle. On March 10, Triple H defended his World Heavyweight Championship against Maven.
On March 17, Triple H faced Goldust and won thanks to interference from Orton. By this time, Batista and Orton were both unable to compete. On the March 24 RAW, Booker T and Goldust defeated Triple H and Ric Flair.
At WrestleMania XIX six days later, Triple H, with Flair's assistance, retained his World Heavyweight Championship against Booker T.
Triple H's Feud with Ric Flair
Triple H and Ric Flair remained allies until May. As Triple H continued to hold the World Heavyweight Championship, Flair became increasingly resentful. In the buildup to Bad Blood, the main feud on RAW centered around Triple H's issue with Kevin Nash.
On May 19, 2003, RAW Co-General Manager Stone Cold Steve Austin decreed that Triple H must defend his World Heavyweight Championship against any former world champion. Seeking an easy win, Triple H stated that he would simply face Ric Flair and asked him to lay down for him. Shawn Michaels then told Flair that he was a legend and could not simply allow Triple H to win without resistance. Flair eventually performed at his best in the match and came close to winning the World Heavyweight Championship.
On May 26, 2003, at the start of the show, Shawn Michaels told Ric Flair that he considered him his idol. Triple H emerged and warned Michaels not to listen to Flair, claiming that without Triple H, Flair would not be where he was today. The main event of the night was a Handicap Match: Ric Flair and Shawn Michaels against Triple H.
During the match, Flair turned on Michaels. Kevin Nash, who had been resting in the locker room, was attacked by an unknown wrestler, who then ran into the ring and helped Triple H and Flair beat up Michaels. Triple H then unmasked the unknown wrestler, revealing him to be Randy Orton. Evolution was reborn.
A week later, Triple H, Randy Orton, and Ric Flair defeated Kevin Nash, Shawn Michaels, and Hurricane. Bad Blood featured a Hell in a Cell match between Triple H and Kevin Nash, with Mick Foley as the special referee. On June 9, Foley entered the ring and began talking about the match, but Triple H came out and attacked him.
On June 15, at Bad Blood, Triple H retained the World Heavyweight Championship against Kevin Nash, while Ric Flair defeated Shawn Michaels with the help of Randy Orton.
The Expansion of Evolution
The following night, Triple H, Ric Flair, and Randy Orton sought a fourth member for Evolution. They opened the show with a segment involving Mick Foley, which ended in his beatdown. Foley was joined by Al Snow and Maven, who then challenged Ric Flair and Randy Orton to a match. Evolution was victorious.
Later that night, in the main event, the World Tag Team Championship rematch between Kane and Rob Van Dam and René Dupree and Sylvain Grenier took place. Kane went berserk towards the end of the match and caused a disqualification by attacking the opponents with a chair.
Triple H entered the ring and said that he missed Kane's old self and invited him to join Evolution. Stone Cold Austin then came out and claimed that Triple H only wanted Kane in Evolution because he was a threat to his title. Austin offered Kane a match with Triple H on the following RAW for the World Heavyweight Championship instead.
RAW Co-General Manager Eric Bischoff appeared and stated that if Kane chose to face Triple H and lost, he would be forced to unmask. Kane grabbed both Austin and Triple H by the throat, making a decision. He released Austin and chokeslammed Triple H.
On June 23, Kevin Nash and Shawn Michaels defeated Randy Orton and Ric Flair in a tag team match. In the main event, Triple H faced Kane. Orton and Flair interfered to help Triple H, but Rob Van Dam came to Kane's aid. Triple H eventually hit the Pedigree and retained his title.
After the match, Eric Bischoff ordered Kane to unmask. Kane removed his mask and chokeslammed his former tag team partner Rob Van Dam.
