Life and Career
Jonas Gricius was a renowned Soviet Lithuanian cinematographer. He was born in Lithuania and was the son of writer Augustinas Gricius. After graduating from the VGIK cinematography department in 1954, Gricius began his career as an assistant cinematographer for Alexander Moskvina at Lenfilm Studios.
Lithuanian Film Studio
In 1958, Gricius joined the Lithuanian Film Studio, where he made significant contributions to Lithuanian cinema. He was the first secretary of the Union of Cinematographers of the Lithuanian SSR (1963-1968) and later served as its chairman (1981-1988). Additionally, he served as the director of the Lithuanian Film Studio from 1978 to 1989.
Awards and Recognition
Gricius's exceptional work earned him numerous awards and accolades. In 1967, he received the USSR State Prize, and in 2013, he was awarded the Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Art. He was also honored with the title of People's Artist of the Lithuanian SSR in 1978 and was made an honorary doctor of VGIK in 2004. Furthermore, he was awarded the Order of Gediminas in 1997.
Political Involvement
Gricius was a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1960. His political involvement contributed to his rise within the Lithuanian film industry and shaped the ideological content of his work.
