Biography of Jonathan Saunders

Early Life and Education

Jonathan Saunders was born in 1977 in Scotland. He is the son of a priest and grew up with a passion for drawing. Despite not initially dreaming of a career in fashion, Saunders attended the Glasgow School of Art and graduated in 1999 with a Bachelor's degree in textile printing. He then pursued his education at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, where he received his Master's degree in 2002.

Early Career Success

Saunders gained recognition for his talent early on in his career. His graduate collection, inspired by the album cover of "Yellow Submarine" by The Beatles, earned him the prestigious Lancome Colour Award in 2002. Shortly after his graduation show, he was commissioned to create prints for the fashion house Alexander McQueen, which featured vibrant prints of tropical birds for their 2003 collection. He also worked as a consultant for fashion houses such as Chloé and Pucci under the guidance of Christian Lacroix.

Rise to Prominence

In September 2003, Saunders made his debut at London Fashion Week. His designs caught the attention of British Vogue, which featured one of his creations on the cover of their January 2004 issue. High-end department stores Harrods and Harvey Nichols placed orders for his collection, cementing his reputation as a rising star in the fashion industry. Saunders continued to showcase his collections at London Fashion Week until 2008, when he decided to take his collection to New York Fashion Week as a natural progression. He later returned to London Fashion Week in 2010.

Current Work and Style

In addition to running his eponymous label, Saunders serves as the creative director of the Milan-based fashion house Pollini. He also collaborates on collections for retail giants Target and Topshop. Saunders is known for his meticulous approach to designing prints, which can take months of painstaking work. He draws inspiration from a wide range of sources, from the designs of American designer Rudi Gernreich to Japanese manga animations. Each print is carefully crafted to give individuality to each garment and uniqueness to the entire collection.
