Biography of Zandra Rhodes
Zandra Rhodes was born in 1940 in Kent, England. Her mother worked at the Paris House of Fashion, which sparked young Zandra's interest in the world of high fashion. In 1959, she enrolled at Midway College of Art, studying textiles. She then continued her education at the Royal College of Art in London, graduating with honors in 1964.
From 1964 to 1967, Rhodes taught at the Royal College while also collaborating with her friend and fellow designer Alexander McQueen on developing their own clothing collection. In 1967, she opened her first shop, called "Fulham Road Clothes Shop," where she sold her own designs. In 1968, Rhodes founded her own fashion house, showcasing high-quality clothing. She named her first collections after herself, featuring a range of chiffon scarves, shorts, jackets, and other everyday wear.
Rise to Prominence
In the 1970s, Zandra Rhodes became one of the most popular fashion designers in Britain. In 1972, she released her new clothing collection titled "Zandra Rhodes II," which included original knit sweaters, coats, and dresses. Apart from her sewing workshops, Rhodes also owned several knitting factories where fabric with raised patterns was produced.
In 1973, renowned photographer Cecil Beaton selected several of Zandra Rhodes' collections for fashion shows held in historic English museums. Many celebrities preferred clothing from this talented designer, including the legendary band Queen, who exclusively wore Rhodes' striking concert costumes. Princess Diana was also a favorite client of Rhodes, who designed a pink chiffon dress adorned with numerous pearl beads and sparkling rhinestones for her. Diana wore this gown on a state visit to Japan.
Innovative Style
Thanks to her bold and unconventional approach to fashion, Zandra Rhodes became one of the most renowned British designers. In 1987, she presented her collection of Indian saris in Bombay. Rhodes' distinctive style is characterized by unpredictability and daring choices. Her unique designs continue to captivate fashion enthusiasts worldwide.
