Biography of Jonathan Sells
Jonathan Sells is a British opera baritone, a young artist who was one of the forty participants in the international vocal competition 'Operalia', held in Moscow in 2011. Born in London, Jonathan is currently a member of the International Opera Studio at the Zurich Opera House. He graduated with honors from both Cambridge University and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, where he studied vocal performance under the guidance of Janice Chapman and became a member of the Guildhall Artist Fellowship society.
Awards and Achievements
In 2009, Sells won the first prize at the Thelma King Competition for Singers. He also received the Rose Bowl at the Guildhall Gold Medal ceremony, the Thierry Mermod Prize for singers at the Verbier Festival, and the silver medal from the Worshipful Company of Musicians. He was also the recipient of the Guildhall Wigmore Recital Prize, which led to his solo concert at Wigmore Hall in March 2010.
Repertoire and Performances
Jonathan Sells has performed various roles including Hercules and Apollo in Gluck's 'Alceste' with the Chelsea Opera Group, Handel's oratorio 'L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato' at the Opéra Garnier, and Leoš Janáček's opera 'From the House of the Dead' at the Zurich Opera. He has also portrayed characters such as Orfeo, Don Alfonso, Leporello, and the King in different productions and festivals around the world.
Future Plans
Sells has upcoming performances as Orfeo in Monteverdi's 'Orfeo' in Sursee, Switzerland, Bartolo in Rossini's 'The Barber of Seville' in Germany, and Figaro in Switzerland. He has also been involved in notable concert works, including Bach cantatas at the Berliner Philharmonie, the world tour 'Jardin des Voix' with William Christie and Les Arts Florissants, and the role of Plutone in Monteverdi's 'Ballo dell'ingrate' with the British vocal ensemble 'I Fagiolini'.
Concert Performances
Sells has performed as a soloist at renowned venues such as Alte Oper in Frankfurt, Carnegie Hall in New York City, Royal Albert Hall in London, and Arsenal concert hall in Metz, among many others. He studied French song with Malcolm Martineau as part of the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme and German Lieder with Graham Johnson at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Sells considers song interpretation an important part of his work and has participated in various festivals and concerts dedicated to specific composers like Schubert, Mahler, Debussy, and Wolf.
