Early Career
Jordan Ayew, a Ghanaian-French footballer, was born in the bustling city of Marseille, France. He first made a name for himself as a promising striker at the Olympique Marseille youth academy, where he honed his skills alongside his older brother, André. In 2009, Ayew signed a three-year professional contract with the club, marking the beginning of his senior career.
Olympique Marseille
In December 2009, with Marseille facing a shortage of attackers, manager Didier Deschamps called up the young Ayew to the first team. On December 16, 2009, he made his debut in the Ligue 1 match against FC Lorient, scoring an impressive goal that secured a victory for his team. In that season, Marseille emerged as the Ligue 1 champions, with Ayew contributing one goal in his four appearances.
Consistent Performances
From the 2010/2011 season onwards, Ayew established himself as a regular in Marseille's starting lineup. He helped his team secure two consecutive Ligue 1 runner-up positions and competed in UEFA club competitions over the course of four seasons.
Loan Spells and Transfer Speculation
In the summer of 2012, Ayew attracted the attention of English club Reading, who offered £3.5 million for his services. The following year, he came close to joining West Bromwich Albion but the move ultimately fell through. To gain more playing time ahead of the World Cup, Ayew agreed to a loan move to FC Sochaux in January 2014. During his loan spell, he scored five goals in 17 appearances, but couldn't prevent the team from being relegated.
Move to Lorient
Following Ghana's participation in the 2014 World Cup, several European clubs expressed interest in acquiring Ayew, whose contract with Marseille was expiring in a year. On July 28, 2014, he made the switch to FC Lorient, signing a four-year deal for a transfer fee around €5 million. He played 31 games for Lorient in the 2014/2015 season, scoring 12 goals.
Aston Villa
In July 2015, Ayew moved to Premier League side Aston Villa on a five-year contract. Manager Tim Sherwood hailed him as a "fantastic young player who is perfect for the Premier League." Sky Sports reported the transfer fee at £12 million. Ayew played 30 games in his debut season for Villa, scoring seven goals. However, the team was relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2015/2016 season.
Transfer to Swansea City
After a season in the Championship, Ayew joined another Premier League club, Swansea City, on January 31, 2017. Aston Villa received Neil Taylor and £5 million in exchange for their star forward.
International Career
Ayew made his debut for the Ghana national team on September 5, 2010, replacing his brother André in a 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Swaziland. He was part of the squad for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, playing in four matches. Ghana finished the tournament in fourth place.
Ayew's first international goal came on June 1, 2012, when he scored a brace against Lesotho in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier. He was selected for Ghana's squad for the 2014 World Cup, scoring a hat-trick in a friendly against South Korea prior to the tournament.
In the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, Ayew helped Ghana reach the final, contributing a goal in the semi-final. He also successfully converted his penalty in the shootout, but the team ultimately lost to Ivory Coast.
At the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, Ayew played a key role in Ghana's campaign. He scored a goal in the opening match against Benin and another in the third match against Guinea-Bissau, helping his team advance from the group stage.
Family
Jordan Ayew comes from a footballing family. He is the son of former Ghana captain Abedi Pele and the brother of André Ayew, Abdul Rahim Ayew, and Imani Ayew.
