Biography of Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho is a Portuguese football coach, the son of Portuguese football goalkeeper and coach Felix Mourinho. He is known for his successful coaching career, having managed top clubs such as FC Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Real Madrid. Mourinho has been recognized as the Best Club Coach in the World by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) in 2004, 2005, and 2010, and was named the Best Coach by FIFA in 2010.

Early Life and Youth

Jose Mourinho was born on January 26, 1963, in Setubal, Portugal, to professional football player Felix Mourinho and a primary school teacher. His maternal relatives were wealthy people, and his great-uncle financed the construction of Vitoria's stadium. Mourinho grew up speaking English, Spanish, and Italian fluently, as his mother insisted on him learning these languages. His father, who was a goalkeeper, played for Belenenses and Vitoria. Towards the end of his professional career, Felix Mourinho became a coach.

Football Career

Until 1979, Jose Mourinho played in amateur leagues, starting with Belenenses' football school and then playing for youth teams such as Rio Ave, Belenenses, Sesimbra, and Comercio e Industria. When his father needed assistance, Mourinho joined Vitoria's team. In his new position, he was responsible for monitoring the opponents' strategies and later started coaching. In the mid-1980s, Mourinho enrolled in the Institute of Physical Education in Lisbon and attended courses by Scottish coach Andy Roxburgh. In 1992, he became an assistant coach for Estrela, then joined the coaching staff of Sporting as a translator and later as the first assistant to English coach Bobby Robson.

Coaching Career

In 1994, Jose Mourinho started his collaboration with Porto under Robson's leadership. The team achieved several victories on a national level, including a second-place finish in the Portuguese Championship, winning the Cup and Super Cup of Portugal. From 1997, Mourinho and Robson became coaches of Barcelona, which finished second in the Spanish Championship and won the national Cup. In 1998, with a new coaching staff, Barcelona became a two-time national champion and won the Cup of Spain. Under Mourinho's direct leadership, the team won the Catalonia Cup in 2000. In the same year, Mourinho became the head coach of Benfica. In 2002, he signed a three-year contract with Porto, starting a new chapter in his coaching career. With Porto, Mourinho won two consecutive national championships, the Cup, and the Super Cup of Spain. In 2003, Porto won the UEFA Cup and the Champions League, defeating Monaco 3-0. Mourinho became the youngest coach to win the Champions League. In 2004, he joined Chelsea at the request of Roman Abramovich. Under Mourinho's guidance, Chelsea became the English champion twice in 50 years, won the Cup and Super Cup of the country, and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League, losing to Liverpool. In 2007, Mourinho left the position after a series of failures. In the following season, he joined the Italian club Inter Milan, which immediately won the Italian Super Cup and the national Championship. Due to his achievements, he earned the nicknames "The Special One" and "The Only One" from his players and fans. In 2014, Mourinho returned to Chelsea for four years, receiving a £40 million fee. He led the team to win the Premier League. In 2015, Mourinho published a book with colorful photos, describing his 15-year coaching career. In 2016, he appeared in Heineken commercials, directed by Guy Ritchie in Prague. In the same year, Mourinho started posting on his own Instagram account. In December 2018, he was dismissed from his position as head coach of Manchester United. In May, he was appointed as the head coach of Tottenham Hotspur. In January 2021, Mourinho led his team to the final of the League Cup, defeating Brentford 2-0.

Personal Life

In 1989, Jose Mourinho married Matilde "Tami" Faria, whom he had known since their school years. In 1996, their daughter Matilde was born, and four years later, his wife gave birth to their son Jose Mario Jr. Mourinho values his family above all else.

Current Endeavors

In November 2019, Jose Mourinho was appointed as the head coach of Tottenham Hotspur, signing a contract until the end of the 2022/23 season. In January 2021, Mourinho led his team to the final of the League Cup, defeating Brentford 2-0.
