Jordan Lynn Graham, a resident of Montana, gained notoriety after pushing her husband off a cliff just a week into their marriage. The incident happened in an instant when her husband grabbed her hand, and she managed to break free and push him off the cliff. The widow initially hid the truth about what happened and continued to lie in court. However, under pressure, Graham finally confessed her version of events under oath. The prosecution is not quick to dismiss everything as an 'accident'.
A resident of Montana, 22-year-old Jordan Lynn Graham did not plead guilty to the charges of first-degree and second-degree murder and giving false statements during the court hearing in September 2013. Her newlywed husband, Cody Johnson, fell off a cliff on July 7th in Glacier National Park, approximately 210 km north of the U.S. District Court in Missoula, where the trial took place. A federal grand jury charged Graham with murder and giving false statements. The charges were read, but Graham waived her right to a trial. She also did not plead guilty to any of the three charges. The young widow was placed under house arrest under the supervision of her parents and required to wear an electronic ankle bracelet. Graham's next court appearance was scheduled for October 15th, 2013. Michael Donahoe, Graham's attorney, claimed that the death of 25-year-old Cody Johnson was the result of an accident. The prosecution insisted that Graham lied and tried to hide the truth about what really happened to Johnson. Initially, Graham told law enforcement that she went looking for her missing husband and stumbled upon his body in 'a place where he would like to see it before he died'. However, her story soon changed.
The Tragic Incident
The newlyweds spent just over a week in marriage before the husband fell off a cliff on one of their hiking trails in Glacier National Park. The version that Cody slipped off the cliff while rock climbing was soon rejected. In a written statement given under oath, Graham told the police that she decided to go to the park with Johnson on the evening of July 7th, but the walk did not initially have a good ending. The woman started a conversation about her doubts in their relationship, which escalated into an argument. During the altercation, Cody allegedly voiced his own doubts about making a terrible mistake in choosing her as his life partner. In a fit of anger, Graham pushed him with both hands, and he fell face down off the cliff.
Johnson's body was discovered several days later. According to Graham's sworn statement, on the same evening her husband died, she was exchanging text messages with a friend. In one of the messages, Graham mentioned that she planned to talk to her husband about their 'doubts'. Her friend replied, 'I'll pray for you guys'. Then Graham sent another message: 'No joke... if you don't hear from me tonight, something happened'. If the text conversation is genuine, it appears that the couple had already indicated to each other before the argument in the park that their marriage may have been a mistake.
Legal Proceedings and Aftermath
Today, Graham faces the possibility of life imprisonment. After her arrest, she wrote several text messages hinting at suicide. However, Judge Donald Malloy and attorney Michael Donahoe assured the public that Graham is not a danger to herself and that she has received necessary psychological assistance.
