Jordin Kare

Jordin Kare is an American physicist and engineer who earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering and physics from MIT in 1978 and a Ph.D. in astrophysics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1984. His brother is Susan Kare, the designer of the original Apple Macintosh's fonts and interface icons.
Career
Kare spent many years working at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). He left LLNL in 1996, briefly worked for a small company developing satellite radar, and then became an independent space systems engineering consultant in 1997, founding his own company. He received a grant from the NASA Institute for Advanced Concepts to study launching objects short distances using relatively low-power lasers.
Filking Hobby
Kare is also known as a science fiction fan and filker. He has regularly attended and participated in science fiction conventions since 1975. He served as editor of The Westerfilk Collection: Songs of Fantasy and Science Fiction, a significant filk songbook, and co-founded Off Centaur Publications, the first commercial label specializing in filk music songbooks and recordings.
Musical Releases
Kare has released two albums of his own songs: Fire in the Sky (1991, distributed by Wail Songs) and Parody Violation: Jordin Kare Straight and Twisted (2000). Five of his songs have been nominated for Pegasus Awards a total of seven times.
