Jorge Barrios, whose full name is Jorge Rodrigo Barrios, was born in 1976 in the small town of Tigre, located near the capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires. He was an Argentine former professional boxer. Barrios had a passion for boxing since his teenage years, but his professional debut took place on August 10, 1996. In just one round, his opponent was unable to continue the fight due to a knockout.

In the following months, the young lightweight athlete achieved one victory after another. It was only in his 15th fight that he was unable to defeat his opponent, Cesar Emilio Domine, due to disqualification during the match on December 20, 1997. Barrios was deeply affected by this disappointing loss, but he came back stronger and emerged as a winner in his next 25 fights. This period is considered the most successful in his career, with only one loss. At that time, his record was nearly perfect, with 39 wins and only 2 defeats.

On August 9, 2003, Barrios stepped into the ring against the World Boxing Organization and World Boxing Association champion, Acelino Freitas. The fight was closely contested, with Freitas falling after a powerful blow in the eighth round but continuing to fight to retain his title. In the eleventh round, Barrios started to lose the advantage he had gained earlier after a series of blows. The round ended with the ringing of the bell. Despite being exhausted during the break, Barrios decided not to give up and continued to fight in the 12th round. However, a few minutes later, he knelt down after a punch from Freitas and, while squatting, signaled to the referee that he could no longer continue the fight. Freitas successfully defended his well-deserved title, and this 11th round was chosen by 'The Ring' magazine as the 'Round of the Year.'

On April 8, 2005, Barrios faced the undefeated Mike Anchondo, the world champion according to the World Boxing Organization. In the fourth round, Barrios prevailed over the heavier and more experienced opponent. After one of his punches, Anchondo was unable to get up on his own, and Barrios won his first-ever championship title.

On May 20, 2006, the young but promising boxer Janos Nagy attempted to take away Barrios' championship title, but the fight lasted only 49 seconds. That was all it took for the world champion to knock out his opponent. It is known that in September 2006, Barrios was supposed to face Juan Manuel Marquez, but the fight was canceled due to a minor injury to Barrios.

On September 6, 2008, Barrios was knocked out by the younger and less experienced Rocky Juarez in the 11th round.
