Early Life and Professional Debut
Wilfred Benitez, a legendary Puerto Rican professional boxer, was born on September 12, 1958, in New York City. He made his boxing debut in November 1973 and quickly rose through the ranks.
Record-Breaking Championship Reign
In March 1976, at just 17 years and five months old, Benitez defeated WBA welterweight champion Antonio Cervantes via split decision. This made him the youngest boxer to ever win a world title in boxing history. Benitez successfully defended his title against Emiliano Villa, Tony Petronelli, and Carlos Palomino.
Triumph and Heartbreak in the Welterweight Division
In May 1979, Benitez faced undefeated WBC welterweight champion Sugar Ray Leonard. Despite a valiant effort, Benitez was ultimately defeated by knockout in the 15th round. The loss marked a turning point in his career.
Comeback and Dominance at Junior Middleweight
Unfazed by the setback, Benitez shifted to the junior middleweight division. In May 1981, he defeated WBC champion Maurice Hope by knockout in the 12th round. He went on to defend his title against Carlos Santos and Roberto Duran, becoming one of the most dominant fighters in the weight class.
The Hirns Challenge and Subsequent Decline
In December 1982, Benitez faced off against former multi-weight world champion Thomas Hearns. After a closely contested bout, Hearns prevailed by majority decision. Following this defeat, Benitez's career took a downward turn, as he alternated between victories and defeats.
Retirement and Legacy
Benitez fought his last professional bout in September 1990. He retired with an impressive record of 53 wins (30 by knockout), 8 losses, and 1 draw.
