Jorge Lavelli: A Theatrical Visionary
Early Life and InfluencesJorge Lavelli, an Italian-Argentinian-French theatrical director, was born to Italian immigrants in Argentina. In the early 1960s, he relocated to France, where he immersed himself in the vibrant theatrical scene.
Breakthrough and Collaboration with Jean Vilar
In 1963, Lavelli's production of Witold Gombrowicz's "The Marriage" introduced the Polish playwright to French audiences. He continued to stage Gombrowicz's works, including "Yvonne, Princess of Burgundy" (1965) and "Operetta" (1971). In 1967, Lavelli began a fruitful collaboration with Jean Vilar and the Théâtre des Nations. His staging of Goethe's "Triumph of Sensibility" won acclaim, as did his production of Oskar Panizza's "Cathedral of Love" (1969), with set and costume designs by Leonor Fini.
International Acclaim and Parisian Leadership
Lavelli's reputation grew internationally as he directed plays by renowned playwrights, including Calderón de la Barca, Shakespeare, Corneille, Lorca, Arrabal, Ionesco, Schnitzler, Brecht, Pirandello, Dürrenmatt, Bernhard, O'Neill, Miller, Pinter, Handke, and Bond. He also directed operas by composers such as Campra, Gounod, Bizet, Debussy, and Prokofiev. In 1987, Lavelli assumed the leadership of the Théâtre de la Colline in Paris, a position he held until 1996.

Lavelli's exceptional contributions to theater have been recognized with numerous awards in France, Spain, and Italy. He is a Knight of the Legion of Honor (1994), Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters (1993), Knight (1992) and Officer (2002) of the National Order of Merit.
