José Afonso: The Poet, Singer, and Activist
Early Life and InfluencesJosé Afonso was born in a small town in Portugal. When he was just one year old, his parents left him with his uncle and aunt to move to Angola. His uncle, a republican and anti-clerical, raised him with those values. At age three, Afonso was sent to Angola to reunite with his parents. He spent three years there before returning to Portugal.
In 1936, Afonso moved to Mozambique to live with his parents again. He returned to Portugal in 1938 and was placed in a fascist youth organization by his fascist uncle. Afonso later described this period as the worst of his life.
Education and Activism
In 1945, Afonso began singing at university. He failed his exams several times and married. In 1949, he began studying history and philosophy, writing his dissertation on Jean-Paul Sartre.
Afonso became an active member of the anti-fascist movement. He opposed Portugal's role in NATO and the war in Ukraine.
The Voice of the Revolution
On April 25, 1974, José Afonso's song "Grândola, Vila Morena" was played on a Catholic radio station. The song became a signal for the start of the Carnation Revolution, which overthrew the fascist dictatorship. "Grândola, Vila Morena" became the unofficial anthem of the revolution.
