Early Life and Career in the Navy
José Baptista Pinheiro de Azevedo was born in Luanda, Angola, on June 5, 1917. He joined the Naval School in 1934 and was commissioned as a midshipman in 1937. After graduating from the Naval School in 1939, he served on various Portuguese Navy ships as a sub-lieutenant.
Command of Ships and Rise Through the Ranks
Pinheiro de Azevedo captained the vessel "Almirante Schultz" from 1946 to 1948. In 1947, he was promoted to senior lieutenant and commanded the corvette "Salvador Correia de Sá" from 1948 to 1953. He attained the rank of lieutenant commander in 1954.
Academic and Professional Contributions
From 1955 to 1963, Pinheiro de Azevedo served as a professor of astronomy and navigation at the Naval School and the Infante D. Henrique Nautical School. He also lectured on captaincy courses and published works on meteorology, technical trigonometry, and navigation. He earned distinctions in various military courses, including the Naval General Staff Course and the Higher Naval Course.
Command in Angola and the Revolution of the Carnations
In 1963, Pinheiro de Azevedo took command of the Santo António do Zaire naval defense zone in northern Angola. In 1974, he joined the Revolution of the Carnations, supporting the rebel forces. He commanded the Navy forces that quelled the uprising and became a member of the ruling National Salvation Council.
Chief of Naval Staff and Political Positions
On April 27, 1974, Pinheiro de Azevedo was appointed Chief of Naval Staff and promoted to vice admiral. He served on the Portuguese Council of State and was a member of the "Council of Twenty," a body responsible for directing the armed forces. He also served as acting president of the republic and as a member of the MFA Delegate Assembly.
Prime Minister of Portugal
In September 1975, Pinheiro de Azevedo became Prime Minister of Portugal. He was known as the "fearless admiral" for his uncompromising stance and personal bravery. He held socialist beliefs and was supported by the Portuguese Communist Party.
