Early Life and Military ServiceJosé de Cañizares y Salazar was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1676. Little is known about his early life, but he reportedly served as a soldier before pursuing a career in drama.
A Master of the "Comedias de Figurón"
Cañizares' greatest success came with his "Comedias de figurón," a type of play that featured comedic characters and had been popularized by Antonio Moreto and Francisco de Rojas. Among his most celebrated works in this genre are "La más ilustre fregona" ("The Most Illustrious Scullery Maid"), "El montañés en la corte" ("The Mountaineer at Court"), and "El Domine Lucas," which satirizes pretentious writers. "El Domine Lucas" became a popular moniker for a class of incompetent writers in Spain.
Other Notable Works
Cañizares also wrote a number of other comedies, including "De los hechizos de Amor, la música es el mayor" ("Of Love's Sorceries, Music is the Greatest"), which is known for its subtle humor. He also penned historical dramas such as "Cuentas del Gran Capitán," "Enrique el Enfermo," and "Picarillo en España."
Influence and Legacy
While Cañizares lacked originality and creative force, he was skilled at adapting the works of his predecessors, including Lope de Vega and Calderón de la Barca. This practice was common in Spanish theater at the time. Cañizares' plays were widely performed and admired, and 80 of them were published. His legacy continues today as a master of the "Comedias de figurón."
