Biography of José Cura

José Cura, an Argentine opera singer and tenor, was born in 1962 in Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina. He began studying composition at the age of 16 under the guidance of Carlos Castro, while Zulma Cabrera taught him to play the piano. In 1982, Cura became a student at the School of the Arts at the National University of Rosario, and within a year, he was already an assistant conductor in the university choir.

At the age of 21, José received a scholarship to study at the renowned Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, where he spent six months. There, he studied conducting, composition, and also sang in the choir. It was at Teatro Colon that he met Horacio Amauri, who taught him vocal technique. After his studies, Cura went to Verona, where he made his debut as an opera performer in the opera "Pollicino" by Hans Werner. His first major success came in 1993 when he sang the role of Jan in "Signorina Giulia" by Bibalo.

His initial success led to further recognition, and soon José Cura became widely known, performing on numerous opera stages worldwide. He received applause from audiences in Milan, Bologna, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Paris, Marseille, Sydney, Melbourne, Vienna, Amsterdam, Zurich, Munich, Hamburg, Berlin, and many other opera venues around the world. His performances in Japan were particularly successful. Critics, who also held a favorable view of the talented Argentine, dubbed him the "tenor of the 90s."

In 1997, José Cura fulfilled the long-awaited role of Othello, and he also has an extensive repertoire that includes operas such as "I Pagliacci," "Il trovatore," "Samson et Dalila," "Don Carlos," "Tosca," "Carmen," "Andrea Chénier," and many others. In 2005, José Cura could be heard at the Metropolitan Opera in "Samson et Dalila." Besides his operatic roles, Cura continues to work as a conductor. In 2001, he conducted the Sinfonia Varsovia orchestra in Warsaw.

It is known that José Cura has three children with his wife Sylvia. The family has moved several times, from Verona to France, settling near Paris, and later relocating to Madrid.
