José Fonte: A Portuguese Defender's Journey
Early Career and Club SetupJosé Fonte, a Portuguese footballer, was born into a family with footballing talent, his younger brother, José Rui, also becoming a professional player. Fonte began his career in the youth academy of Sporting CP in Lisbon. In 2004, he sought playing opportunities at Feirense in the Segunda Liga.
Breakthrough in Vitoria de Setubal and Benfica Experience
In 2005, Fonte joined Vitoria de Setubal in the Primeira Liga, making his debut in the top division. In 2006, he signed with Benfica, but spent the following seasons on loan at Paços de Ferreira and Estrela da Amadora. In 2007, he left Benfica as a free agent.
Crystal Palace and Southampton Success
Fonte moved to Crystal Palace in England's Championship in 2007. He scored his first goal for the club in 2008. In 2010, he transferred to Southampton for a fee of £1.2 million. Fonte's time at Southampton proved successful, helping the team win promotion to the Championship in 2011 and the Premier League in 2012. He was appointed club captain in 2014 after Adam Lallana's departure.
West Ham and China Stint
In 2017, Fonte joined West Ham United for £8 million. After a brief spell in China with Dalian Yifang, he returned to England in 2018.
International Career
Fonte made his debut for the Portuguese national team in 2014. He was part of the victorious squad that won the 2016 European Championship. He also represented Portugal at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.
