José María Álvarez

José María Álvarez was a Spanish poet, novelist, and translator. He studied philosophy and literature at the University of Murcia, philosophy at the Sorbonne, and history and geography at higher education institutions in Spain.

Most Notable Work

Álvarez's most notable work is his cycle "Museo de cera" (Museum of Wax Figures), on which he worked for many years. He also translated works by literary giants such as Robert Louis Stevenson, Jack London, Edgar Allan Poe, William Shakespeare, François Villon, Constantine Cavafy, T.S. Eliot, Friedrich Hölderlin, and Vladimir Mayakovsky.

Poetic Style

Álvarez's poetry is characterized by several trends common to contemporary Spanish poetry. His protagonists are not rebels seeking to change the world but rather bon vivants and decadents. His poems often begin with elaborate epigraphs, followed by self-contained poems in which he attempts to organize chaos in an effort to make sense of a world he finds incomprehensible.

Family

Álvarez's first wife was Elin Eli, and they had two children, Miguel (1964) and Rafael (1966). His second wife was Carmen Mari.
