Biography of Jose Maria Morelos y Pavon

Jose Maria Morelos y Pavon was a national hero of Mexico and one of the leaders of the Mexican people's fight for independence. He was born in a family of a carpenter. From 1790 to 1795, he studied at a seminary, where he was a student of M. Hidalgo, who had a great influence on him. After teaching at a school, he became a parish priest in the late 1790s.

Joining the Rebellion and Leading the Movement

At the beginning of the uprising against Spain in 1810, Morelos joined Hidalgo's rebel forces, and after Hidalgo's death, he became the leader of the radical wing of the liberation movement. From 1811 to 1813, Morelos achieved several victories over the Spanish army. In 1813, he initiated the convocation of the Chilpancingo Congress and presented his revolutionary program "Sentiments of the Nation," which called for the establishment of Mexican independence, abolition of slavery, and other reforms.

Becoming the Head of Executive Power

Appointed as the generalissimo and head of the executive power, Morelos issued a decree on the emancipation of slaves and the abolition of some taxes. He also succeeded in having the Congress adopt the Declaration of Sovereignty and Independence of Mexico. However, in late 1813 and early 1814, Morelos' forces suffered a defeat when they attempted to capture the city of Valladolid, which weakened Morelos' position and support.

Capture and Execution

In November 1815, Morelos' forces were defeated by the Spanish, and he himself was captured and executed.
