José María Yazpik: A Journey from Uncertainty to Stardom
Childhood and EducationJosé María Yazpik was born on November 13, 1970, in Mexico City. Growing up with his brother Carlos and sister Cristina, Yazpik enjoyed a comfortable upbringing in a wealthy family. His father, a successful gynecologist, provided financial security, while the family indulged in golf, tennis, and soccer at an exclusive country club. At age 12, the family relocated to the affluent San Diego area in California. However, a financial crisis forced them to move to Tijuana, significantly reducing their lifestyle. Yazpik struggled academically and faced expulsion in high school, but his athleticism kept him enrolled.
Discovering Acting
A pivotal moment came when a teacher involved Yazpik in a school play. Inspired, he began taking acting classes and discovered a passion for performance. Despite his theatrical successes, Yazpik initially pursued a communication degree and later law, only to drop out of both programs.
Film Debut and Rise to Stardom
Yazpik's film debut came through a friend of his father, who paid the aspiring actor 30 pesos for a home video. This led Yazpik to enroll in Televisa's renowned artistic education center, launching his career in Mexican telenovelas in the mid-1990s. He quickly became a household name, but soon embarked on a path to Hollywood and international recognition. In the late 2000s, he starred in Spanish films and collaborated with Pedro Almodóvar three times.
"Narcos" and "Narcos: Mexico"
In 2017, Yazpik joined the cast of Netflix's "Narcos" in its third season. He portrayed Amado Carrillo Fuentes, a Mexican criminal who controlled half of the drug trade between Mexico and the United States. A year later, "Narcos: Mexico" premiered, featuring Yazpik in the lead role. The series spanned three seasons, showcasing the rise and fall of Carrillo Fuentes.
Personal Life
Yazpik was in a relationship with Mexican actress and model Iliana Fox, with whom he had a daughter named Leonora in 2009. The couple parted ways two years later but maintained a friendly relationship. Yazpik is now partnered with another Mexican star, Johanna Murillo. They welcomed a daughter, Lolo, in 2018.
