José Ulisses de Pina Correia e Silva: Prime Minister of Cabo Verde

Early Life and Career

José Ulisses de Pina Correia e Silva was born in Praia, Cabo Verde. He initially pursued a career in banking, serving as Director of Administrative Affairs at the Bank of Cabo Verde from 1989 to 1994. He also taught at the Jean Piaget University of Cape Verde.

Political Career

Correia e Silva's political career began in 1995 when he was appointed Secretary of State for Finance. From 1999 to 2001, he held the post of Minister of Finance. He went on to serve as Vice President of the Movement for Democracy (MpD) political party from 2006 to 2008.

In 2008, Correia e Silva was elected Mayor of Praia. He was re-elected in 2013. That same year, he became President of the MpD. He also held the positions of Executive President of UCCLA (a branch of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries) in 2013 and President of IDC Africa in November 2014.

Prime Ministership

On April 22, 2016, Correia e Silva became Prime Minister of Cabo Verde after the MpD won the parliamentary elections. He has since met with representatives of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in June and September 2016.

In February 2020, Correia e Silva was re-elected as leader of the MpD, receiving 99% of the votes. He subsequently became the MpD's candidate for the 2021 legislative elections.
