Early Life and Education

Wilhelm Georg Valentin Althaus was a renowned German trombonist and composer. Growing up in Lorraine, he later resided in Trier and studied at the court chapel in Halle. His professional journey commenced in Cologne with the Flora Orchestra, a renowned ensemble specializing in light music.

Orchestra and Solo Performances

From 1900 to 1905, Althaus's talents graced the stage of the Darmstadt Orchestra. Following a season in Dortmund, he became the musical director of the Memel City Orchestra from 1906 to 1908. Subsequently, he joined the Berlin Blüthner Orchestra (1908-1911), collaborating with esteemed conductor Franz von Blon.

Between 1911 and 1914, Althaus primarily toured Germany as a soloist, partnering with notable figures such as conductor Julius Einödshofer. He later returned to Dortmund, where he performed and instructed.

Military Service and Post-War Career

Althaus volunteered for infantry service in the German army during World War I (1916-1917). Upon its conclusion, he joined the Düsseldorf Orchestra (1917-1918) and became a celebrated soloist with the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig (1918-1923).

American Legacy

In 1923, Althaus embarked on a new chapter in the United States. He joined the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Fritz Reiner, showcasing his virtuosity in performances of Ferdinand David's Concertino for Trombone. Althaus eventually settled in Los Angeles in 1924, establishing a modest music school for trombonists.

Compositions and Recordings

Althaus's legacy extends beyond his performances. He composed several works for trombone and orchestra, including his renowned Concerto No. 1 in B-flat major. His compositions continue to grace the repertoire of trombonists today, with notable recordings by renowned artist Armin Rosin.
