Early Life and Education
Josef Kriehuber was born in Vienna, Austria, on April 14, 1797. His artistic journey began at an early age, as he enrolled in the drawing class at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts at the tender age of 13.
Apprenticeship and Early Career
In 1818, Kriehuber embarked on a teaching position at the palace of the Polish princes Sanguszko. After three years, he returned to Vienna, where he began to work extensively in the relatively new medium of lithography from 1826 onwards.
Rise to Fame as a Portrait Artist
Kriehuber's unique and skilled approach to lithography quickly propelled him to the forefront of the art world. He became one of the most celebrated and highly paid portrait artists in Vienna, capturing the likenesses of prominent figures from various walks of life.
Imperial Recognition and Academy Membership
In recognition of his artistic prowess, Kriehuber was elected to the prestigious Vienna Academy of Fine Arts in 1860, a testament to his standing as one of Austria's most esteemed artists.
Prolific Portfolio

His prolific output included approximately 3,000 lithographic portraits, immortalizing notable individuals such as Emperor Franz I of Austria, Prince Klemens von Metternich, and Field Marshal Joseph Radetzky. He also created portraits of renowned musicians, including Franz Schubert, Niccolò Paganini, and Franz Liszt.
Artistic Legacy
In addition to his lithographic work, Kriehuber also painted in oil and watercolor and created drawings. His son, Friedrich Kriehuber, followed in his father's footsteps as a talented portrait artist.
