Joseph Augustine Di Noia

Early Life and Education

Joseph Augustine Di Noia was born on July 10, 1943, in New York City, USA. A member of the Eastern Dominican Province of St. Joseph, Di Noia attended Providence College from 1961 to 1963. He was ordained a priest on June 4, 1970, and taught theology at Providence College from 1971 to 1974.

Di Noia earned his doctorate from Yale University in 1980 with a dissertation on "Catholic Theology of Religions and Interreligious Dialogue." He later taught theology for 20 years at Dominican House of Studies and was editor of the journal "The Thomist."

Pastoral and Administrative Roles

Before his work at the John Paul II Cultural Center, Di Noia served for seven years as staff director of the Secretariat for Doctrine and Pastoral Practices of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (now the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops). In 1998, he was awarded the title of Master of Sacred Theology by the Dominican Order. From 1997 to 2002, he was a member of the International Theological Commission.

Vatican Curia

On April 4, 2002, Di Noia was appointed Deputy Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. On June 16, 2009, he became Secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments and was named an archbishop.

Episcopal Consecration and Titular Archdiocese

On July 11, 2009, Di Noia was consecrated a bishop by Cardinal William Joseph Levada, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Archbishop Donald Wuerl of Washington Archdiocese, and former Archbishop of Louisville Thomas Kelly, O.P. The site of the ordination was the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, D.C.

Di Noia was assigned the titular see of Oregon. As a residential diocese, it was one of the two oldest metropolitan dioceses (along with New York) in the United States after Baltimore, the first diocese (and later, archdiocese) in the United States. It became a metropolitan archdiocese in 1850, but the diocese was transferred to Portland in 1928. The See of Oregon became a titular archdiocese in 1996, but Archbishop Di Noia is the first prelate to which it has been assigned as a titular see.

Ongoing Roles

Archbishop Di Noia also serves as an ordinary member of the Pontifical Academy of St. Thomas Aquinas. In May 2011, he was appointed a consulter to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and promoted to Secretary of the Congregation on September 21, 2013.
