Path to Professionalism
Born and raised in Cameroon, Samuel Eto'o Fils embarked on his professional football career in 1997, joining the renowned French club Lyon. Despite making a promising debut in the 1997-1998 season, he found himself relegated to the bench in the following year.
Lens and Middlesbrough Interlude
Eto'o's fortunes turned in 1999 when he transferred to Lens for £2 million. He quickly established himself as a regular starter, helping the team secure a berth in the 1999-2000 UEFA Cup. After winning the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon, Eto'o struggled to regain his place in the Lens lineup.
In 2000, he made the move to Middlesbrough in England, where he made a goalscoring debut against Coventry City. However, regular playing time proved elusive, and he sought a loan spell with Metz in France in 2002 to maintain match fitness ahead of the World Cup.
Middlesbrough's Frustration and Saudi Sojourn
Upon returning from Metz, Eto'o became a regular starter for Middlesbrough. Nonetheless, the 2004-2005 season was disastrous, with Eto'o making just a single appearance.
In 2005, he joined Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad, winning the AFC Champions League that year.
Return to Europe and Club Hopping
In 2006, Eto'o signed as a free agent for Sedan in France. The club was relegated to the second division the following season. Eto'o then played for Nice in the French top flight in 2007-08.
Stint in Qatar and Unfulfilled Trials
In 2008, Eto'o moved to Qatari club Al-Kharitiyath, but the team was relegated to the first division. Eto'o became a free agent after failing to renew his contract.
He had an unsuccessful trial at Bulgarian club Levski Sofia in the summer of 2009.
International Success
Eto'o's international career with Cameroon began in 1997. He participated in the 1998 and 2002 World Cups, as well as the Confederations Cups in 2001 and 2003. Eto'o also played in the Africa Cup of Nations in 1998, 2000, and 2008.
