Joseph-Siffrein Duplessis: A Distinguished French Portrait Painter

Early Life and Training

Joseph-Siffrein Duplessis was born in Carpentras, France, to a family of artists. He initially received training from his father before continuing his studies under the renowned painter Joseph-Gabriel Imbert.

Journey to Italy and Artistic Influences

In 1699, Duplessis embarked on a journey to Rome, where he worked in the atelier of Pierre Subleyras. It was here that he formed a close friendship with Claude Joseph Vernet, an influential landscape painter. The vibrant artistic atmosphere of Rome significantly influenced Duplessis's style and approach to portraiture.

Return to France and Academy Recognition

Upon his return to France, Duplessis spent a brief period in Carpentras and Lyon before settling in Paris in 1752. There, he joined the prestigious Académie Saint-Luc, a renowned art academy. His talent was recognized early on, and he gained admission to the Salon de Paris, the official exhibition of the French Academy of Arts.

Notable Portraits and Legacy

Throughout his career, Duplessis painted portraits of numerous prominent figures, including King Louis XVI, Jacques Necker, and Benjamin Franklin. His iconic portraits of Benjamin Franklin, completed in 1778 and 1785, have been used on the front of the United States hundred-dollar bill since 1929, cementing his enduring legacy as a master portraitist.
