Early Career

Born in Austria, Martin Damm was a talented tennis player who excelled in both singles and doubles. As a junior, he won three European Championships in different age categories (under 12, 14, and 16).

Breakthrough in Doubles

In 1990, Damm won his first ATP Challenger title in Brest, France, in doubles with Girt Dzelde. The following year, he achieved the same feat in singles in Warsaw, Poland. He also triumphed in two doubles Challengers and reached the semifinals of an ATP tournament in Umag.

Rise in the Rankings

Damm continued to climb the doubles rankings in 1992, winning two singles and two doubles Challengers. He finished the year ranked among the top 100 players in both singles and doubles.

In 1993, Damm made a breakthrough in doubles, reaching the final of an ATP tournament in Copenhagen. He then won his first two ATP titles in Zaragoza and Munich and became the runner-up at the US Open with Karel Nováček. These achievements propelled him into the top 50 in the doubles rankings.

Success in Singles

While Damm enjoyed more success in doubles, he also made strides in singles. In 1994, he reached the fourth round of the Australian Open, defeating a top-10 player for the first time. He finished the year with three tournament wins and broke into the top 20 in doubles.

Continued Success

In 1995, Damm continued to excel in doubles, winning two tournaments with Anders Järryd. However, his form in singles waned, and he dropped out of the top 50. In singles, he reached the semifinals in Stuttgart and Rotterdam, marking his first entry into the top 50.

Peak of His Career

1996 proved to be a memorable year for Damm. He reached his first ATP final in singles in Seoul and repeated the feat in Long Island and Beijing. In Beijing, he defeated Michael Chang, then ranked number two in the world. He also played in three doubles finals, winning one in Beijing. In 1997, Damm reached the final of an ATP tournament in Copenhagen and achieved his highest career singles ranking of 42. In doubles, he reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and Wimbledon and won three tournaments.

In 1998, Damm won three doubles titles, including the prestigious ATP Super 9 tournament in Toronto. He finished the year ranked in the top 20, despite missing part of the clay and grass-court seasons.

Later Career

In 1999, Damm's form dipped slightly, and he fell out of the top 100 in singles. However, he regained his form in doubles, winning one ATP title and reaching the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in mixed doubles.

In 2000, Damm won three ATP titles, including the Italian Open, an ATP Masters tournament. He also reached the final of another ATP Masters tournament in Miami and finished the year ranked in the top 20 in doubles. In singles, he returned to the top 100 and reached the third round of Wimbledon.

Focus on Doubles

From 2001 onwards, Damm focused primarily on doubles. He won two tournaments and reached the final of the Cincinnati Masters. In April 2002, he began partnering with Cyril Suk, with whom he won three tournaments and reached the quarterfinals of the French Open and Wimbledon.

Continued Dominance in Doubles

Damm and Suk continued to dominate the doubles circuit in 2003 and 2004, winning six tournaments and reaching the final of the ATP Masters Cup twice. Damm also made his debut at the Olympic Games in 2004.

Later Partnerships

From 2005 onwards, Damm played with a variety of partners, including Jared Palmer, Radek Štěpánek, Mariano Hood, and Mahesh Bhupathi. He won two tournaments with Štěpánek and reached the quarterfinals of the French Open with Hood.

Final Years

In 2006, Damm teamed up with Leander Paes. They reached the final of the Australian Open and won three tournaments, including the US Open. Damm also reached the final of the US Open in mixed doubles with Květa Peschke. He finished the year ranked in the top 10 for the first and last time in his career.
