Biography of Joseph Jacobbi

Joseph Jacobbi is the owner of a restaurant called 'Casa-Di-Pizza' in Buffalo, New York. He gained notoriety in October 2010 when he was sentenced to a unique punishment for tax evasion. At the age of 57, Jacobbi narrowly avoided prison for failing to pay taxes. 'Casa-Di-Pizza' is a popular establishment known for its high-quality food, although some customers have criticized its high prices. Jacobbi's business was thriving until authorities became interested in his financial activities.

Tax Evasion and Punishment

According to Jacobbi's confession, he had been hiding taxes for a significant period from March 2004 to May 2008. He was found guilty of third-degree grand larceny for evading approximately $130,000 in taxes through four years of underground double-bookkeeping. After paying $25,000, Jacobbi still owed the government $104,295.31.

An Original Punishment

Instead of serving a prison sentence, Jacobbi received a unique punishment for his tax evasion. He was ordered to feed the poor and underprivileged with his signature pizza. The Supreme Court of the state believed that this punishment would be more beneficial for the city than imprisoning Jacobbi.

Weekly Pizza Distribution

Joseph Jacobbi was sentenced to distribute 12 pizzas per week for a year. The sentence took effect on Tuesday, October 19. This punishment covers half of the amount Jacobbi evaded, and he will have to make monthly payments to repay the remaining balance.

A Surprising Celebration

While a seven-year prison term loomed for Jacobbi, the pizza distribution punishment seemed much more appealing. Jacobbi was allowed to choose the toppings for the pizzas, which only added to his disappointment after the trial. However, for many homeless and impoverished individuals, Jacobbi's tax evasion became an unexpected celebration. Every Tuesday for the next year, they would receive free pizza from 'Casa-Di-Pizza,' known for its consistently good food.
