Joseph Kasa-Vubu: First President of Congo

Joseph Kasa-Vubu, a Congolese political leader, became the first president of the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Congo and Zaire).

Early Life and Education

Born of Bakongo ethnic origin, Kasa-Vubu received his education at Catholic mission schools. He briefly studied to become a priest and later worked as a teacher and a government official.

Political Rise

In 1955, Kasa-Vubu became president of the Alliance of the Bakongo People (Abako), a cultural and social organization that aimed to establish an independent Bakongo state. After political unrest in 1959, Abako became a political party.

Independence and Political Crisis

Upon Congo's independence in 1960, Kasa-Vubu became the president and Patrice Lumumba became the prime minister. However, the country soon faced a crisis with an army mutiny, Belgian military intervention, and the secession of Katanga province. Kasa-Vubu dismissed Lumumba and supported the military coup led by Joseph Mobutu.

Later Political Career

After Lumumba's assassination in 1961, Kasa-Vubu consolidated his power. In 1965, he appointed Moise Tshombe, the leader of the rebellious Katanga province, as prime minister to promote national unity. However, he was overthrown by a military coup led by Mobutu in the same year.

Retirement and Death

Following his overthrow, Kasa-Vubu retired from politics and lived on a farm near Boma in Lower Congo. He passed away on March 24, 1969, at the age of 57.
