Birth and Early Life

Joseph Kony was born on September 18, 1961, in a small village in northern Uganda. He was the youngest child of Luizi Obol, a schoolmaster and Catholic church catechist, and Norah Anek Oting. Kony belongs to the Acholi ethnic group, which constitutes around 5% of Uganda's population. He briefly served as an altar boy in his father's church.

Rebellion and Alleged Atrocities

In 1987, Kony led a rebellion against the Ugandan government, claiming to be possessed by the Holy Spirit. His followers, known as the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), were accused of systematic abductions of minors, using them as child soldiers and sex slaves.

International Criminal Court Indictment

In 2005, the International Criminal Court (ICC) indicted Kony for war crimes and crimes against humanity. An arrest warrant was issued for his capture. Since then, Kony has remained elusive and reportedly enjoys the support of armed groups in neighboring countries.

"Kony 2012" Film and Criticism

In 2012, the organization Invisible Children Inc. released a 30-minute film titled "Kony 2012" that shed light on Kony's atrocities and called for his arrest. The film faced criticism for inaccuracies and oversimplifying the complex situation in Uganda.
