French Statesman and Politician
Joseph Laniel was a prominent French statesman and politician during the Fourth Republic. A conservative figure, he played a significant role in French politics.
Premiership
From June 28, 1953, to June 19, 1954, Laniel served as the Prime Minister of France. During his tenure, he faced the challenges of the ongoing First Indochina War.
Political Affiliations
Laniel was a co-founder of the Republican Party of Liberty (PRL). Later, he joined the National Center of Independents and Peasants (CNIP).
Downfall
In 1954, the French defeat at Dien Bien Phu in Indochina marked a turning point in Laniel's premiership. Facing widespread criticism and loss of support, his government was overthrown. He was succeeded by Pierre Mendès-France.
