Graf Werner II of Habsburg
Werner II of Habsburg was the son of Otto II, Count of Habsburg, and his wife, Hilde. Otto II was killed in 1111, and Werner inherited his father's portion of the Habsburg lands. His brother, Albrecht II, who had previously shared the lands with Otto, had inherited the other portion. When Albrecht died childless in 1140, Werner reunited the county by inheriting the remaining territories.
In 1135, Werner II became Landgrave of Upper Alsace. He possessed substantial estates in the region, including the Abbey of Muri in the canton of Lucerne. In 1143, Werner died in Italy near Rome during an outbreak of plague that ravaged the Imperial army after the Battle of Tusculum.
Marriage and Children
Werner II married Ida, Countess of Starkenberg. They had three children:
- Albrecht III the Rich (died 25 November 1199): Count of Habsburg from 1167
- Gertrude (died 15 February 1132/1134): married Thierry III (died 1155/1160), son of Thierry II, Count of Montbéliard, heir to the County of Montbéliard
- Richenza (died December 1180): married Louis I (died 1180), Count of Ferrette from around 1160
