Early Life and EducationJoseph Ricketts was born in 1941 in a small Nebraska town. He attended Creighton University but dropped out several credits short of a degree, opting instead to pursue practical experience in business.
Dun & Bradstreet and First Omaha Securities
Ricketts began his financial career at Dun & Bradstreet, where he worked as a branch manager. In 1975, he founded his own brokerage firm, First Omaha Securities. The company was later renamed Accutrade to reflect its focus on electronic trading.
Leadership Roles
In 1982, Ricketts became chairman and CEO of First Omaha Securities. He also founded AmeriTrade, a discount brokerage firm, in 1983. In 1987, he established TransTerra Co., a brokerage company that allowed trading via push-button phones.
