Josh Powell: A Man of Suspicion
Josh Powell, an American citizen, has been under intense media scrutiny since the disappearance of his wife, Susan Cox Powell. Powell vehemently denies any involvement and insists that Susan simply ran away.
Suspicious Behavior and Tangled Relationships
Powell's friends and family members have expressed concern for the well-being of Susan and their two young sons. Susan's friends allege that she had repeatedly confided in them about her father-in-law, Steve Powell, peeping on her while she was dressing. After discovering Steve's voyeuristic tendencies, Susan demanded a move with her husband and children to Utah, which Josh eventually agreed to.
Susan Powell's Disappearance
On December 7, 2009, 28-year-old Susan vanished without a trace in West Valley City, Utah. Her husband was the last person to see her alive. Josh claims that Susan went to bed around midnight on December 6 and that he left for an impromptu camping trip with his sons, aged 2 and 4, shortly after. However, a blizzard raged that night in Utah, and Josh states that he drove for nearly three hours in the wilderness, spending the night in his family's minivan with his sons.
Investigative Doubts and Accusations
Susan's family and friends doubt that she would have allowed her father-in-law to take her sons camping in such weather conditions. Josh's apparent lack of cooperation with police has also raised suspicions.
In an interview, Powell claimed that his wife left voluntarily and would return once the public and her family backed off. He also accused Susan's family of pressuring her to be perfect and that this had driven her into hiding. In a separate interview, he labeled his wife "extremely unstable" and suggested that her mental illness played a role in her disappearance.
Steve Powell's Arrest and Disturbing Revelations
Steve Powell, Josh's father, insinuated a history of mental illness in Susan's family and claimed that she had run away with another man because she was "highly sexually promiscuous." He further alleged that "Susan lost control at times... just like her mother."
Close friends of Susan, such as Kirsi Hellewell, assert that Susan and Josh often fought and discussed divorce. Hellewell claims that when Susan said "I'm going to take the kids," Josh retorted, "Only over my dead body."
Child Pornography Discovery and Further Charges
The case took a dramatic turn when Steve Powell was arrested for possession of child pornography. Police searched his home on August 25, 2011. After reviewing only 5-10% of the files on his computers, they discovered approximately 2,000 sexually explicit images and videos of women and young girls, including some of Susan, apparently taken without her knowledge. The photos also included images of Steve's neighbors, some of whom were children, in bathrooms and toilets.
After Susan's disappearance, Josh moved back into his father's home with his children. It is believed that he was well aware of his father's sexually deviant behavior. Upon Steve Powell's arrest, the West Valley City Chief of Police stated that the evidence seized was sufficient to convince a court that Steve Powell's home was not a safe environment for Susan's children, 6-year-old Charlie and 4-year-old Braden. The children were subsequently placed in protective custody.
Ongoing Investigation and Hopes for Closure
Investigators believe that Steve Powell may face additional charges as they analyze the newly recovered evidence. They remain hopeful that the mystery surrounding the disappearance of Susan Cox Powell will finally be solved.
