From Morbidly Obese to Half Her Weight: Candice McBride's Journey

Childhood and Unhealthy Diet

Candice McBride, a 27-year-old photojournalist from Salt Lake City, Utah, struggled with obesity throughout her childhood. Her family's focus on convenience led to a reliance on unhealthy microwave dinners. This pattern continued as McBride grew older, leading to weight gain and a reliance on plus-sized clothing.

Facing Death and Desperation

At her heaviest, McBride weighed 418 pounds. The weight took a toll on her physical and emotional health, leaving her feeling helpless and close to death. "I hid behind a façade of confidence, but I was so depressed," she admitted. "I genuinely felt like I was dying, and it was scary."

Sisterly Intervention and Surgery

McBride's sister, also struggling with weight issues, encouraged her to embark on a weight loss journey with her. After dieting for six months, McBride underwent vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) surgery in June 2015. The procedure removed about 70% of her stretched-out stomach, significantly reducing its capacity.

Surgery as a Catalyst for Change

While VSG provided a tool for McBride, she emphasized that true change came from a holistic approach. She abandoned processed foods and adopted a 70:30 alkaline-acid diet, resulting in a weight loss of 93 pounds over two years. "Surgery was a tool to help me make a permanent lifestyle change," she said.

Body Dysmorphia and Loose Skin

McBride's rapid weight loss brought new challenges. She struggled with body dysmorphia and the challenges of excess loose skin. "It was a struggle to see myself differently in the mirror for a while," she admitted. "I looked so different so quickly that it was almost like a disorder. I was amazed and disgusted at the same time."

Embracing Health and Confidence

Despite the difficulties, McBride's life has been transformed. She can now fit comfortably in chairs, wear regular seatbelts, and live without constant fear. "I'm the happiest I've ever been," she said. "I love who I've become, because it's truly who I've always been on the inside."

Advocacy and Encouragement

McBride is now an advocate for weight loss and healthy living. She encourages others to focus on nutrition, fitness, and the importance of sticking to a routine. "Keep your eye on the prize," she advises. "If I can do it, you can too."
