Shmuel Birshtein: A Jewish Writer's Journey
Early Life and EducationShmuel Birshtein was born into a Jewish family. As a child, he studied in a cheder (a traditional Jewish elementary school) before joining a socialist youth organization called Hashomer Hatzair (The Young Guard).
Emigration and Service
At the age of 17, Birshtein emigrated to Australia. He served in the Australian army during World War II. There, he met a lifelong friend and gifted storyteller, the artist Yossl Berger, who later became the illustrator of his books.
Post-War Settlement in Israel
After the war, Birshtein settled in Israel, initially in the town of Nazareth Illit and later in Jerusalem. He gained recognition as a writer when he began reading his stories on the army radio station Galei Tzahal in the early 1980s.
Literary Style and Legacy
Birshtein wrote primarily in Yiddish and Hebrew. His stories are known for their wit, humor, and insights into Jewish life. They were translated into many languages, including Russian by Alexander Alexandrovich Kryukov.
