Early Life and Family Background

Kavvadias was born in 1897 on the Ionian island of Cephalonia to a prominent shipping family. His father, Charalambos, owned a trading business that primarily served the Russian military. His mother, Dorothea Angelatou, hailed from a well-known family of Cephalonian shipbuilders.

Education and Literary Beginnings

Kavvadias received his primary education in Piraeus after the family relocated there in 1922. While attending secondary school, he met the writer and naval physician Pavlos Nirvanas, who greatly influenced his literary aspirations. At the age of 18, Kavvadias published his first poems under the pseudonym Petros Valhalas.

The Call of the Sea

Amidst family struggles due to the loss of his father's business, Kavvadias supported himself by working in a shipping company's office. However, his passion for the sea drew him closer to his true calling. In 1928, he embarked on his first voyage as a cabin boy on the cargo ship "Agios Nikolaos."

Military Service and Wartime Experiences

In 1938, Kavvadias was drafted into the army and subsequently trained as a radio operator. He served as a communications officer during the victorious Greek-Italian War of 1940-1941.

Following World War II and Greece's Civil War, Kavvadias returned to his maritime career as a radio operator on merchant ships, continuing his work until 1974. During these years, he published numerous collections of poems and short stories, showcasing his unique perspective on life at sea.

International Recognition and Legacy

Kavvadias's work gained international acclaim with the publication of his poetry collection "Vahta" in French in 1959. In the late 1990s, his popularity skyrocketed among Greek youth after renowned composer Thanos Mikroutsikos set his poems to music in the song cycle "The Southern Cross."
