British-American actor Giovan Adepo's star rose in 2016 with his breakout performance in the critically acclaimed drama "Fences," alongside Denzel Washington and Viola Davis.
Early Life and Education
Born on September 6, 1988, in Upper Heyford, Oxfordshire, England, Adepo's mother was a Nigerian woman raised in England, while his father was an African American from Tennessee, USA. The family moved to the US when he was two, and he identifies as an American. Despite still holding dual citizenship, he feels no particular connection to Britain.
Although he had some experience in student theater, Adepo initially pursued other interests. He attended Waldorf High School in Maryland and went on to study political science and philosophy at Bowie State University, where he played football and considered a professional sports career. However, writing drew him in, and he enrolled in screenwriting courses. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in 2011, he moved to Los Angeles.
Embracing Acting
In Los Angeles, Adepo's interest in acting grew, and he began studying under a student of Lee Strasberg. His career started with a small role in the TV series "Blood Relatives" in 2014. He gained recognition for his role as John Murphy in the second and third seasons of the popular supernatural series "The Leftovers."
Breakthrough in "Fences"
Adepo's casting in "Fences" came through his portrayal in "The Leftovers." He was initially nervous about meeting Denzel Washington, but Washington's calming presence eased his nerves. The film earned multiple Oscar and other award nominations.
Leading Roles and Superhero Ventures
In 2018, Adepo starred as Ed Boyce, a US Army soldier in World War II in the film "Overlord." The character had originally been conceived for a white actor, but the role was adapted when Adepo was cast.
He also played Will Reeves in the 2019 superhero series "Watchmen," based on the comic books. In 2022, Adepo shared the screen with Brad Pitt in the historical drama "Babylon."
