Baroness Anelay of St Johns: A Trailblazing Conservative
Early Life and CareerLady Anelay of St Johns was born on 17 July 1947. After graduating from Enfield County School and Bristol University, she worked as a schoolteacher from 1969 to 1974. She subsequently served with the Citizens' Advice Bureau, as a magistrate, and on Social Security Tribunals.
Entry into Politics
Lady Anelay's political journey began in 1993 when she became Chairman of the Conservative Women's National Committee. In 1990, she received an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), and in 1995, she was named a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE). In 1996, she was elevated to the House of Lords as Baroness Anelay of St Johns.
Rise through the Conservative Ranks
From 1997 to 2002, Lady Anelay held several positions in the House of Lords, including Opposition Whip, Shadow Minister for Culture, Media, and Sport, and Shadow Minister for the Home Office. In 2002, she became Shadow Home Secretary, a position she held until 2007.
Chief Whip and Government Minister
On 2 July 2007, Lady Anelay was appointed Shadow Chief Whip in the House of Lords. Upon the formation of the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government in 2010, she became Government Chief Whip. In 2014, she was named Minister of State in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
Brexit and Ministerial Roles
Lady Anelay retained her position in the Foreign Office when Theresa May became Prime Minister in 2016. In 2017, she was appointed Minister of State for Exiting the European Union, a role that included overseeing the UK's preparations for Brexit. She served in this capacity until 2019.
