Early Life and Activism
Israel Karghman was born into a Jewish family in Berdichev, Russian Empire (present-day Ukraine). He joined the clandestine He-Halutz movement in the Soviet Union and later became a colonist in the Ha-Mishmar commune in Crimea. In 1925, he was exiled to Siberia for his activities but was repatriated to Mandatory Palestine in 1929.
Laborer and Trade Unionist
In Palestine, Karghman worked as a laborer in Petah Tikva, Magdiel, and Jerusalem. From 1938, he worked in the Ata factory and led its workers' committee. In 1950, he studied in the United States.
Parliamentary Career
Karghman entered the Knesset in 1956, replacing Zalman Shazar who had resigned. He was re-elected to the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th Knessets (1959-1974), representing the Mapai, Avoda, and Ma'arach factions. He served on the State Control, Finance, and Labor committees, chairing the Finance Committee for fourteen years.
Death and Legacy
Karghman died on November 17, 1987, at the age of eighty. He published articles in "Davar" and "Ha-Poel Ha-Tzair." He was survived by his two children, Gury and Edith. His legacy as a dedicated labor activist and prominent Knesset member continues to inspire future generations.
