Józef Ignacy Kraszewski

Historian of Polish literature, Józef Ignacy Kraszewski was born in the Volyn Province and studied at the Lviv Gymnasium and the Jagiellonian University in Krakow.

Academic Career

Kraszewski became a professor of Slavic languages and literature at universities in Freiburg, Warsaw, and Vilnius. He was also a member of the Polish Academy of Knowledge, the Scientific Society of Lviv, and the director of the Czartoryski Museum and Library in Krakow.

Works on Polish Literature

His primary works focused on the poets Adam Mickiewicz ("Adam Mickiewicz," 1897) and Zygmunt Krasiński ("Zygmunt Krasiński: Life and Young Work, 1812-1837," 1904). He also studied old Polish literature, publishing works such as "Philosophy of Jan Kochanowski" (1888), "Szymonowicz's Drama: Castus Joseph" (1892), and "Polish Humanists" (1891).

Accolades and Legacy

On April 24, 1929, Kraszewski was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Poznań. Despite his death in Krakow, he was buried in the Lychakiv Cemetery in Lviv, considering it his true home after spending his life there.
