Józef Kościelski
Józef Kościelski, a Polish playwright, was born into a noble family in the 19th century.
Education and Travels
Józef Kościelski pursued a legal education in Berlin and Heidelberg. He embarked on a transformative journey to France, Africa, and the Middle East between 1871 and 1872.
Political Career
In 1884, Kościelski became a member of the German Reichstag. His pro-Prussian stance drew significant criticism from his fellow countrymen.
Cultural and Social Activism
After 1896, Kościelski withdrew from politics and acquired the estate of Miłosław. He devoted himself to cultural and social pursuits, adopting an anti-Prussian position. He patronized Polish students in Germany and established an art gallery featuring Polish paintings at Miłosław. He also contributed funds to the first monument to Juliusz Słowacki on Polish soil in 1899.
Later Life and Legacy
Józef Kościelski founded and led the Society of Polish Journalists and Writers. He was a member of the Poznań Society of Friends of Science. In 1904, he settled in Poznań and founded the "Straż" organization, serving as its president from 1905 to 1909.
Kościelski passed away in Poznań and was laid to rest in Miłosław. Despite his literary endeavors, his writings did not garner widespread recognition or critical acclaim.
