Early Life and Career

Juan Manuel Vargas was born into a family of football enthusiasts in Lima, Peru. Despite growing up under the care of his grandmother, Vargas' passion for soccer was evident from an early age. He honed his skills playing with friends in the streets of Callao and Magdalena, eventually joining the youth academy of Universitario de Deportes at the age of 12.

Return to Universitario and National Debut

After a brief stint with Deportivo Unión Minas, Vargas returned to Universitario in 1999. In 2002, he made his professional debut for the club, earning a starting spot due to financial struggles that forced the team to field young players. Vargas' exceptional performance in his debut match against Deportivo Cienciano led to his inclusion in the Peruvian national team in 2004.

International Success and Transfer to Colón

Vargas played a pivotal role in Peru's success at the 2011 and 2015 Copa América tournaments, where they won bronze medals. In 2005, he moved to Argentine club Colón, where he became known for his set pieces, particularly his free kicks. His impressive goal against Boca Juniors caught the attention of European clubs.

European Odyssey: Catania

In 2006, Vargas was transferred to Italian club Catania for a fee of €3.35 million. Despite initially being acquired as a backup, Vargas quickly proved his worth, becoming a regular starter and playing a key role in Catania's successful Serie A campaign. He scored his first Serie A goal in 2007 against Siena and contributed significantly to the club's promotion to the quarterfinals of the Italian Cup.

Moving to Fiorentina

After two impressive seasons at Catania, Vargas received offers from several top European clubs, including Real Madrid and Barcelona. In 2008, he signed a five-year contract with Fiorentina for €12 million. Vargas debuted for the club in the Champions League and became a regular in Serie A, scoring his first goal for Fiorentina in 2009 against Cagliari.
