Career Beginnings in Colombia
Ángel was born into the world of football in Colombia. He began his professional career with Atlético Nacional, where he honed his skills as a striker.
Shining Star at River Plate
In 1997, Ángel's talent caught the attention of Argentine giants River Plate. He was brought in to fill the void left by the departing Hernán Crespo. Ángel quickly established himself as a worthy replacement, scoring an impressive 43 goals in 82 league appearances.
Premier League Adventure
In 2001, Ángel made a groundbreaking move to England, joining Aston Villa for a then-club record fee of £9.5 million. He quickly became a fan favorite, earning the Golden Boot as the club's top scorer in the 2003/04 season with 16 league goals.
MLS Stint and Decline
In May 2007, Ángel embarked on a new chapter in his career with the Red Bull New York of the MLS. He enjoyed a successful tenure as one of the league's brightest stars. However, his goalscoring form declined in later seasons.
Return to Roots and Retirement
In January 2013, Ángel returned to his Colombian roots, signing a one-year contract with Atlético Nacional. He played out his final season in professional football before officially retiring in December 2014.
