Juan Valdivieso (1910-2007) was a versatile Peruvian footballer, goalkeeper, forward, and coach. He made history as the youngest goalkeeper at the 1930 FIFA World Cup and represented Peru in the 1936 Olympics.
Club Career
Valdivieso spent his entire club career with Alianza Lima, playing both as a forward and a goalkeeper. He holds the Peruvian record for the most goals scored in a single match, netting 7 goals against Sportivo Union in an 8-1 victory.
International Career
Valdivieso was a Peruvian international and participated in multiple Copa América tournaments, winning the title in 1939. He also represented Peru in the 1930 FIFA World Cup, where he was the youngest goalkeeper in the competition.
Coaching and Later Life
After retiring as a player, Valdivieso became a coach, including a stint as head coach of the Peruvian national team. He also worked as a carpenter and spent 30 years working for the Lima municipality.
Legacy
Juan Valdivieso passed away in 2007 at the age of 96. His legacy lives on through his family. His son, Luis Valdivieso Montano, served as Peru's Minister of Economy and Finance, while his grandson, Juan Pablo Valdivieso, represented Peru in swimming at the 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympics. Valdivieso remains an icon in Peruvian football history, remembered for his versatility, talent, and contributions to the game.
