Juan Vicente Pérez Mora, the celebrated Venezuelan centenarian, stood as the oldest known living person in his nation, a title bestowed upon him by esteemed organizations such as the Gerontology Research Group (GRG), Guinness World Records, and LongeviQuest Group (LQ). Upon the passing of Saturnino de la Fuente Garcia, a fellow centenarian from Spain, on January 18, 2022, Pérez Mora became the oldest living man in the world. His remarkable age placed him among the top four oldest men in recorded history. On December 26, 2023, he joined the elite group of individuals who have reached the centenarian milestone of 100 years. Pérez Mora's extraordinary life came to an end on April 2, 2024, at the venerable age of 114 years and 311 days.
Humble Beginnings in the Andes
Juan Vicente Pérez Mora was born on May 27, 1909, in El Cobre, Táchira, Venezuela. His parents, Eucidio Pérez and Edelmira Mora, raised him alongside eight siblings. In 1913, the family relocated to Caserio Cariqueña, San José de Bolívar, where they established a farm. From childhood, Pérez Mora assisted his father and brothers with farm work. At age ten, he briefly attended school but his education was cut short when his teacher fell ill. Despite this setback, a book gifted by the teacher ignited Pérez Mora's passion for reading and writing, which he pursued throughout his life.
A Devoted Farmer and Family Man
Pérez Mora spent his adolescence assisting his brother, Miguel, in the neighboring village of Los Paujiles. It was there that he met his future wife, Ediofina Garcia. They married in 1938 in San José de Bolívar and settled in Los Paujiles. Later, they acquired a farm in Caserio Cariqueña, where their children were born. Together, Pérez Mora and Garcia welcomed eleven children into the world: six sons and five daughters.
Life at an Extraordinary Age
Following his wife's passing in 1998, Pérez Mora's health began to decline. By 2007, at the age of 98, he relied on a wheelchair for mobility. In May 2019, he celebrated his 110th birthday, becoming the first known Venezuelan male centenarian. As of May 2020, six of his children remained alive: three sons and three daughters.
A Global Icon
On June 18, 2020, Pérez Mora granted an interview to EFE, becoming the oldest living person in Venezuela. Following the death of 112-year-old Saturnino de la Fuente Garcia of Spain on January 18, 2022, Pérez Mora ascended to the title of oldest living man in the world. He celebrated his 113th birthday on May 27, 2022, and a year later, marked his remarkable 114th year on Earth.
