Born as a seemingly normal baby, Juanita weighed a healthy 6 pounds (about 2.7 kg) at birth. However, within a few weeks, she started rapidly gaining weight, and by her second week of life, her mother noticed that Juanita had become significantly heavier. Currently, at 10 months old, Juanita weighs around 20 kg, and it is uncertain whether her weight gain will stop at this point.

Medical professionals are still unable to determine the exact cause of Juanita's rapid weight gain. Tam Fry from the Child Growth Foundation explains that while there are several factors that can influence a child's weight, none can explain such a significant difference. Despite the ongoing investigations, the medical community remains uncertain about the underlying cause of Juanita's extreme obesity.

Juanita's mother, Sandra Franco, a Colombian woman, is unable to provide her daughter with the necessary medical treatment. She does not have a job or sufficient savings to afford the medical care required for Juanita's condition. The scale of the problem is overwhelming for Sandra, and she hopes that the doctors can find a solution soon.

Juanita's case is not entirely unique, as there are several diseases that can cause rapid weight gain in children. Conditions such as Prader-Willi syndrome, which causes constant hunger, Cushing's syndrome, which involves excessive cortisol hormone production, and Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, which leads to abnormal body growth, can all contribute to excessive weight gain. It remains unknown whether Juanita suffers from any of these conditions or if she has been affected by another illness. However, medical professionals are actively searching for answers and hope to uncover the truth soon.

Unfortunately, Juanita's treatment and examination started later than it should have due to the financial constraints faced by her mother. However, recently, Juanita received help from the Colombian charity organization "Gorditos de Corazon" (translation: "chubby hearts"), which arranged for her to travel to the capital city, Bogota, for the necessary medical evaluations.

The founder of "Gorditos de Corazon," Salvador Palacio Gonzalez, emphasizes the severity of the problem and states that more and more young children are suffering from excessive weight worldwide. Gonzalez reveals that Juanita is the third child weighing over 20 kg that he has encountered in the past year. Just a year ago, the project assisted Santiago Mendoza and Mayra Caicedo, who together weighed over 41 kg. Gonzalez indicates that there seems to be an unusual epidemic occurring, as thousands of children in Colombia alone suffer from overweight issues, and globally, the number reaches millions.

Despite the international recognition of the organization, there is still much work to be done by the volunteers. Unfortunately, Juanita's future looks bleak due to her excessive weight. Her weight issue guarantees a range of severe health problems, with type 2 diabetes being the most immediate concern. According to Fry, there are officially registered cases of children as young as 4 years old with diabetes. Such an early diagnosis can lead to significant heart problems by the time the child reaches adolescence.
