Early Life
Judy Foote was born on June 23, 1952, in Grand Bank, Newfoundland and Labrador. Before entering politics, she served as the Director of Communications at Memorial University of Newfoundland.
Provincial Political Career
Foote's political career began as an advisor to Premier Clyde Wells. From 1996 to 2007, she represented Grand Bank as a Liberal Party Member of the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador.
During her time in the provincial government, Foote held several ministerial positions, including Minister of Rural Development and Regional Affairs (1996-1997), Minister of Industry, Trade, and Technology (1997-1998), Minister of Education (1998-2000, 2001-2003), and Minister of Industry, Trade, and Rural Development (2003-2007).
Federal Political Career
Foote entered federal politics in 2008, representing Random-Burin-St. George's for the Liberal Party. She served as Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party from 2010 to 2015.
After the Liberals' victory in 2015, Foote became Minister of Public Services and Procurement. She received the highest percentage of votes of any candidate in the country in the 2015 election, with almost 82%.
Lieutenant Governor
In 2018, Foote was appointed as Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, becoming the first woman to hold the position.
Personal Life
Foote has been a survivor of two bouts of breast cancer, diagnosed in 2000 and 2014.
